Rancho Mirage
Incorporated in 1973, Rancho became the first “suburb” of Palm Springs. Once a fly-in destination with a small airport, Rancho soon became attractive to developers and small ranches gave way to larger country clubs. The Thunderbird Country Club became the first 18-hole course in the valley. Finished in 1951, it hosted the Ruder Cup only years later. Tamarisk was the second country club, finished in 1952, and was founded by some of the biggest stars in Hollywood who created the club for Jewish families. Jack Benny, Danny Kaye and the Marx Brothers, among others made up the “Golden 65” founders. Ben Hogan was hired as the first pro. It was the largest and last desert home of Frank Sinatra.
Notable points of interest include: Rancho Mirage Library, Eisen-hower Healthcare, The River Complex, The Children’s Discovery Museum, Sunnylands and the McCallum Theater.
