La Quinta
Dates, not being native to California, were brought to La Quinta in 1880 by the USDA as an agricultural experiment. The climate in La Quinta proved ideal and the date industry exploded. The La Quinta area now produces millions of pounds of dates for export each year. In 1926, the La Quinta Resort was established for Hollywood celebrities and socialites, and Coachella Valley’s first golf course was built. The La Quinta Resort, as well as the construction of State Route 111, brought expansion and growth. The area now showcases PGA West, which includes six courses including La Quinta Resort and is the home to a number of prominent golf tournaments and invitationals.
Notable points of interest include: Old Town La Quinta, Farmers Market, Art of Main Street, La Quinta Museum, Lake Cahuilla Recreation Area, Ironman 70.3, PGA West, Santa Rosa Mountains and Civic Center Park.
