Palm Springs
For centuries, the Cahuilla people called the Palm Springs area home and the beautiful canyons bear testament to their civilization. In the 17th and 18th centuries, explorers from both Spain and Mexico visited the area and Franciscans built missions. In 1876, over 31,000 acres were subdivided in checkerboard allotments; half the land going to settlers and half going to the Cahuilla. Rail lines and ranches were built. By 1900 the desert climate was considered curative and healthful. Not long after, Palm Springs was discovered by Hollywood, as most movie contracts stated that stars couldn’t be more than two hours away during film production. The industry’s elite built homes up and down the valley. Many of these homes still exist, some in almost original condition.
Notable points of interest include: The Aerial Tramway, Palm Springs Air Museum, Modernism Week, Indian Canyons, The Palm Springs Film Festival, Village Fest and The Palm Springs Art Museum.
